I recently began working from home, and to ensure a seamless work-from-home experience, I decided to set up a new internet connection.
After looking at different options, I decided to go with Verizon Fios because it’s known for being reliable.
For a few months, everything went fine. My internet was fast, and I could work without any issues.
But then, out of nowhere, my Fios Wi-Fi just stopped working.
I was stuck! I called customer service, and they told me a tech team would come in two days.
What was I supposed to do in the meantime? I had some urgent deadlines coming up.

Restart The Router
One of the simplest and most effective troubleshooting steps when your Wi-Fi is not working is to restart your router.
To do this, carefully unplug this power cable from the router and let it stay disconnected for 30 to 45 seconds.
This gives the router a chance to discharge any residual electrical charge.
Then plug the power cable back into the router firmly and wait a few moments for the router to fully power up.
During this time, you’ll likely see a series of lights flashing as the router reboots.
Once the router has completed the restart process, which usually takes a minute or two, check your device to see if the internet connection has been restored.
This method helps clear temporary glitches and errors that routers can accumulate over time. By restarting the router, you provide it with a fresh start, eliminating these issues.
Additionally, routers have memory where they store information about connected devices and network settings. A restart wipes this memory clean, forcing the router to reestablish connections and settings from scratch, which can resolve many connectivity problems.
Check Broadband Cable Connections
Examine the Ethernet or broadband cables connected to the back of your router to ensure they are securely plugged in. Look for any signs of damage or fraying, and make sure they are in good condition.
Additionally, check that the connections at the back of the router are snug. If they’re loose, consider replacing the cables with new ones. Over time, these cables can wear out, so it’s a good idea to swap them for fresh ones if needed.
Ensure Ample Wi-Fi Signals
Weak Wi-Fi signals can cause internet issues, and interference from devices like microwaves can worsen the problem.
If your internet is acting up, make sure your Wi-Fi signals are strong. Wi-Fi routers typically have an effective range of around 30 feet, but obstacles such as walls can diminish this coverage.
To achieve this, position your router centrally, away from obstructions, and minimize interference from other devices like microwaves.
Check if Your Data Limit is Exhausted
If you’ve exhausted your data limit, i.e., your internet usage has reached its maximum limit, you won’t be able to connect to the Internet.
With Fios, you won’t incur extra charges for exceeding your data limit; instead, your internet connection will be disconnected. To resolve this, you can consider upgrading your data plan.
It’s worth noting that internet service providers like Fios typically offer a range of plans, including limited and unlimited options.
Limited plans have a set amount of data included, while unlimited plans provide you with continuous internet access without worrying about reaching a data limit.
Reset Your Router If Nothing Else Works
If you’re still stuck with internet troubles after trying other fixes, it is time to reset your router. Note that this process will erase all the custom settings.
To do this, look for a small reset button, usually on the back or bottom of your router.
Hold it down for about 10-15 seconds (or until the lights start flashing) with a paperclip or something similar.
It may take a few minutes for the router to restart after the reset process. Once this is done, you will have to set it up again.
This process will also trigger a software update which will help get rid of any glitches affecting the router’s functionality.
